The city of Paris was born and developed from this crossroads: many streets still bear witness, by their names, to the ancient routes, particularly commercial or religious, that have crossed the city throughout its very long history as its mentioned in the map of Paris. The Rue de Flandre, for example, recalls the importance of trade with Flanders as early as the Middle Ages, while the Rue Saint Jacques designates, at the same time, the stopover in Paris on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela, between Aachen and Bordeaux.
Paris is the capital city of France, situated on the River Seine, in northern France, at the heart of the Île-de-France region ("Région parisienne"). The Paris "aire urbaine" (roughly: "metropolitan area") is one of the most populated areas of its kind in Europe, with a population of roughly 12 million, including 10 million in the Paris urban area, plus the population of the commuter belt surrounding it. Paris has a population of a little over 2 million within city limits as its mentioned in the map of Paris.
Paris occupies the heart of a sedimentary basin in the western reaches of the great plains of Northern Europe. In the centre of the fluvial plain of the Seine, the city of Paris lies just downstream of the Seine-Marne confluence and upstream of the confluence with the Oise. The naturally occurring waterway crossroads the Paris map explains the existence and exceptional development over fifteen centuries of this urban pole.

And the beautiful month of May in Paris: the Sorbonne occupied, barricades. Paris surprises. Paris sings. "It's 5 o'clock, Paris wakes up... »
