Opened at the end of the eighteenth century, the Louvre is the country most renowned museum and one of the most visited in the world. Presently, louvre Paris receives over 8 million visitors each year. The Louvre Paris is owned by the French government; however, since the nineties it has become more independent. Since 2003, the louvre Paris has been required to generate funds for projects. By 2006, government funds had dipped from 75 percent of the total budget to 62 percent (see louvre Paris map). In 2008, the French government provided $180 million of the Louvre Paris yearly $350 million budget; the remainder came from private contributions and ticket sales.
